Hurricane Florence Is Now a Category 3 Storm

As Hurricane Florence intensified into a major, Category 4 storm in the Atlantic Ocean today (Sept. 10), astronauts and satellites have spotted the enormous weather system from space.

Steve Pfaff, a warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service's Wilmington office, warned impacts could include storm surge and wind damage, although the storm's path remains uncertain at this time.

Where is the hurricane now?

As of 5 a.m. ET Monday, Hurricane Florence's center was about 625 miles southeast of Bermuda and was moving west-northwest at a speed of 9 mph.

Florence continued its west-northwest crawl toward the southeastern USA coast, packing maximum sustained winds of 90 miles per hour. It appears the storm is mostly likely to make landfall in North or SC by the end of the week, but it could still shift, and states in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast are being warned to brace for potentially historic storm effects. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 30 miles from the center; tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 140 miles.

What else should I know?

"We are preparing for the worst, and of course hoping for the best", South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said.

The storm is on track to hit the Carolinas and mid-Atlantic region as early as Thursday, according to the hurricane centre. All three states have declared states of emergency.

"We here in North Carolina are bracing for a hard hit", Cooper said Monday.

"Although Isaac is forecast to begin weakening when it approaches the Lesser Antilles, as it is still expected to be at or near hurricane intensity when it reaches the islands".

The NHC added that Florence, which reached major hurricane status several days ago but weakened into a tropical storm, now has an eye.

Authorities in coastal towns have told residents to pick up sandbags and in North Carolina they are already preparing bulldozers and chain saws in case they are needed in any future clean-up and rescue operations.

In addition, in the Pacific, what's now Hurricane Olivia is forecast to approach Hawaii as a tropical storm on Tuesday.

"We do not want to risk one SC life in this hurricane". The Navy planned to send ships from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia out to sea.

However, it must be stated that there remains a lot of uncertainty in the forecast for hurricane Florence at this time and it is too early to make portfolio decisions based on the current outlook, for the majority of people.

The early projections show a 20-30"+ rainfall forecast, winds over 110 miles per hour, and a major storm surge!"
