Hollywood Icon Burt Reynolds Dead At Age 82

According to reports, the star of Smokey and the Bandit, Deliverance and Boogie Nights was recovering from a short illness in hospital when he suffered a heart attack. He reportedly died Thursday morning at Jupiter Medical in Florida. In 2010, Reynolds underwent a quintuple heart bypass one year after entering rehab to end a reliance on prescription drug habit acquired after back surgery. The actor recently appeared in the indie film The Last Movie Star, which told the story of an aging acting legend.

In his 2015 memoir But Enough About Me, he said: "I didn't open myself to new writers or risky parts because I wasn't interested in challenging myself as an actor".

Before that, he was the archetypal good ol' boy actor, frequently starring in action movies and the kind of hyper-masculine roles that simply don't exist in modern movies.

An iconic Hollywood sex symbol in front of the camera, Reynolds also tried his directorial hand behind it, and later earned a reputation for philanthropy after founding the Burt Reynolds Institute for Film & Theatre in his home state of Florida.

"It was the only time I saw men get up, sick, and walk out of a theater", he added.

He also turned down an offer to play retired astronaut Garrett Breedlove in the 1983 hit movie "Terms of Endearment". Arnold Schwarzenegger tweeted, "Burt Reynolds was one of my heroes".

But it was John Boorman's 1972 thriller "Deliverance", which cast Reynolds as outdoorsman Lewis Medlock, that is widely credited for launching his early career.

Reynolds is survived by his son, Quenton, whom he adopted with ex-wife Loni Anderson, when he was three days old.

As news of the star's death broke, fans took to Twitter to express the grief for Reynolds' death. "He showed the way to transition from being an athlete to being the highest paid actor, and he always inspired me".
