She wore a shimmering gold dress, with sequinned heels - the fourth outfit Franklin was clothed in during a week of events leading up to her funeral.

Many online loved the homage. The late diva also performed the hymn "I'll Fly Away" on the 1997 compilation album Diana Princess of Wales Tribute, which raised funds for the Princess Diana Memorial Fund.

Since Franklin's death, Owens said a close group she described as "Aretha's angels" have "worked tirelessly" and been guided by a single question: "What would Aretha want?"

"Aretha Franklin, y'all", LaBelle said.

"After all she gave to the world, I felt we needed to give her an appropriate send-off that would match her legacy", Owens said. "Celebrate Aretha", before breaking into "What a Friend We Have in Jesus".

He revealed that both he and his wife, Hillary Clinton were "groupies" of Franklin during their own college years and ended his tribute by playing Franklin's song, "Think", on his iPhone.

"There are some girls who haven't been born yet ... who will be inspired by Aretha", he said. He stans! "This woman got us all here in these seats today, not because she had this breathtaking talent, which she did, not because she grew up as at least the princess of soul... but because she lived with courage". She worked her can off to get where she was. "Aretha never took orders from nobody but God".

Clinton said he showed up early when he learned that Franklin was performing. Whether bringing people together through a thrilling intersection of genres or advancing important causes through the power of song, Aretha's work reflected the very best of our American story - in all of its hope and heart, its boldness and its unmistakable beauty. Her music, he said, "captured some of our deepest human desires, namely affection and respect".

The report noted that Franklin was dressed in a full-length red dress for her first public viewing on Tuesday, and made a wardrobe change into a baby blue dress the following day.

The tribute is a nod to Franklin's funky '80s tune, "Freeway of Love, " which prominently featured the auto in the lyrics and video.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan spoke at the ceremony and announced that the city would be renaming Chene Park, where the music legend once performed, to Aretha Franklin Park.

"Aretha Franklin was given special gifts but she used [them] in a special way".
