NH's Day steps in at Ohio State

On Wednesday, Ohio State placed head football coach Urban Meyer on administrative leave while the school investigates what he knew about former assistant Zach Smith's allegedly abusing his wife repeatedly over the course of six years.

Courtney Smith told Stadium, a sports network, that she told Meyer's wife in 2015 about the alleged domestic violence.

Meyer fired Zach Smith on July 23, shortly after Brett McMurphy reported allegation of domestic violence and felonious assault stemming from that 2015 incident - something Meyer denied knowledge of during Big Ten Media Days on July 24. Co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ryan Day is stepping in as acting head coach.

"Gene (Smith) and I agree that being on leave during this inquiry will facilitate its completion", Meyer said in a statement. Smith had been arrested for criminal trespassing in May.

Smith was sacked right before Big Ten Media Days and was replaced on an interim basis by former Buckeyes wideout Brian Hartline. Nor will they be lost on those calling for Urban Meyer's job in the wake of McMurphy's report.

Smith was sacked last month after being charged with criminal trespassing in relation to dropping his children off at his ex-wife's home against her wishes, according to Bleacher Report.

Several calls placed by ESPN to Ohio State's Title IX office were not returned Wednesday.

McMurphy's latest report shows that Courtney Smith had exchanged text messages with Meyer's wife Shelley and the wives of other coaches on the team regarding the allegations of abuse at the time. Charges were never filed.

When asked, she said Shelley never came back to clarify whether she ever told her husband.

Zach Smith's attorney, Brad Koffel, told CNN in a statement: "Zach Smith wants to be as transparent and honest as possible but it is not going to be done today through the media". Smith was sacked July 24. Do you have a restraining order?

Earlier this offseason, the Ohio State Buckeyes dismissed WRs coach Zach Smith after it was revealed that Smith had abused his then-wife. Here are five things about Urban that you need to know in the midst of what is now a pending investigation into the claims. On Wednesday, the Cleveland Plain-Dealer obtained nine reports from the police department in the Columbus suburb of Powell, Ohio, that detailed more issues between the Smiths. "The decision was made, it's time to move forward".

Meyer is heading into his seventh season at Ohio State, with a record of 73-8, a national title and two Big Ten Conference championships.
