Marvel puts Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on hold

Whilst Gunn had mentioned there were already sizeable chunks of script written for the movie that Disney were apparently going to go ahead with, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the movie is now on hold.

It said: "The production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is being put on hold for the time being as Marvel and Disney regroup on the project, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter".

The decision comes over a month after Gunn was sacked from the franchise after the resurfacing of disturbing tweets where the 51-year-old director made jokes about child rape, pedophilia, and the Holocaust.

The trade reports that Disney has dismissed the crew members which had assembled for pre-production to seek other work.

It's been a tough month for Guardians of the Galaxy fans, and things just got a lot tougher. The film's release may ultimately be years away.

"The timeline has been pushed out", added another source. Members of the cast, and in particular Drax actor Dave Bautista, have been supportive of Gunn and in some cases joined calls for him to be reinstated. THR notes that Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi recently had a meeting with Marvel, but it's unknown what was discussed. Despite apologizing for said tweets, admitting that there was a time in which he sought to shock people with his sense of humor, the mouse house insisted Gunn's tweets went against the company's values and made a decision to cut business ties with him.

No release date has ever been set for the third Guardians Of The Galaxy, which has proved a huge hit with critics and audiences since debuting in 2014.
