#JustIn: Kaliagnar M. Karunanidhi Passes Away At 94

The DMK had demanded land at Marina beach for burial of its patriarch M Karunanidhi who passed away at a Chennai hospital Tuesday evening.

Later, on July 31 the hospital indicated that Karunanidhi may have to have an extended stay at the hospital due to age-related overall decline in his general health, altered liver function and haematological parameters. 94-year-old Karunanidhi was first admitted to the hospital on July 18 for a change of tracheostomy tube and an infection in the urinary tract. Following the death of Annadurai in 1969, he took over as leader of the DMK and as chief minister, a post he would hold for almost 18 years over five separate terms.

"My thoughts are with the family and the countless supporters of Karunanidhi Ji in this hour of grief". Several reports say that DMK cadres will be marching towards Chief Minister's office.

Karunanidhi was chief minister of Tamil Nadu five times and successfully contested 12 state elections, building legions of supporters on the way.

When C.N. Annadurai broke away from Periyar's Dravida Kazhagam to start the DMK in 1949, Karunanidhi joined him. Karunanidhi is considered as the leader who has always been concerned about his party and its people.

The Press Trust of India news agency said a security alert had been sounded across the state, bearing in mind the outbreaks of violence in the past over the deaths of popular figures.

Since then he continues to be monitored by a team of specialists. "If MGR was the welfare agenda man, bordering on populism, much of Karunanidhi's politics focused on creating infrastructure", said political analyst TS Sudhir.

Actors S.S. Rajendran won a seat in local elections in 1962 and M.G. Ramachandran became chief minister after he left the DMK to set up his own party, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), following differences with Karunanidhi. The two parties have been sharing power in the state ever since. His son M.K Stalin is the party chief now.

Later, after Jayalalithaa's death in December 2016, he had expressed regret, saying "I had hurt her".
