Celebrities tweet love, condolences after Aretha Franklin dies in Detroit

Franklin cut some of her greatest records at Atlantic-she recorded so many great songs, that it's impossible to choose just one to serve as a signature.

"Her voice was unique, her piano playing underrated".

Aretha Louise Franklin was born on March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee. Stars including Tom Jones and Liam Gallagher have left tributes to Aretha Franklin. "A Farewell Spectacular", in Chicago.

Franklin underwent surgery for an unspecified illness, reported to be pancreatic cancer, in December 2010 and was frequently ill, while keeping a regular concert schedule, in the years since. A year before her death, Aretha announced that she would stop touring.

The 1967 fusion of Franklin's gospel holler with a relentless R&B groove, Respect was adopted as an anthem by African-Americans at the height of the civil rights movement.

Her publicist confirmed the news to Associated Press. The string of songs that spring to mind at the mere mention of Aretha's name seems endless: "Chain of Fools", "Son of a Preacher Man", "Think", "Daydreaming". Records, a small Detroit recording outfit, and later a contract with Columbia, where she made nine records under the guidance of legendary producer John Hammond. Franklin's grandmother, Rachel, and gospel legend Mahalia Jackson helped raise Franklin and her siblings, and her father began managing her gospel career when she turned 14.

"My treatments are going very well", she continued.

I've seen her live at the Palace, the Fox and at one of the most magical musical nights in Detroit: the Motown 50 Celebration.

Following her parents' separation, Aretha's mother moved to Buffalo in NY but she would frequently visit her children in Detroit. Her passing is not only a tremendous personal loss for me, but for people all over the world who were touched by her incredible gift and remarkable spirit.

"That way there wouldn't be so many spoons in the soup; there would only be one Aretha spoon".

Aretha Franklin has died at the age of 76.

She would record, and in some cases write, more original hits — Freeway of Love, Sisters are Doin It For Themselves and the George Michael duet I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me) were all big 80s hits — but her barrier-obliterating talent allowed her to crisscross genres and record with just about anyone.

"I only had three hours sleep that night", she told talk show host Rachael Ray in a subsequent interview.

"It's hard to conceive of a world without her", Streisand said. I've played this album on Christmas morning ever since.

"She had a tough childhood", Ritz told the magazine. There were reports that her first husband hit her in public at least once, and that he shot her production manager. And because of her many great artistic and cultural achievements, it will forever be given. He lapsed into a coma and didn't reawaken before his death in 1984. She occasionally confided her troubles in him, but mostly, she kept them close. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005. The sheer force of her emotion combined with the precision of her vocal technique meant that Franklin could reach almost everyone: In the wake of Dr. King's assassination, Time put her on its cover in June 1968; she was the first African-American woman to appear there.

"Aretha Franklin's voice is one of the glories of American music", Jon Pareles wrote in the New York Times.

The "Queen of Soul" was an 18-time Grammy victor with gospel roots and had an inarguable impact on popular culture.
