Australia PM Malcolm Turnbull defiant over fresh leadership challenge

During a three-way vote, whoever comes last in the first round will be eliminated with a second round taking place to decide who becomes leader.

Morrison, an ambitious man who has always dreamed of the top job, snatched the leadership from the hands of hardline conservatives who had engineered the ouster of incumbent moderate Malcolm Turnbull. "I'm getting on with my job of delivering good government for the people of Australia, and supporting the Turnbull government in doing that".

He became the fourth prime minister dumped by own party since 2010 in an extraordinary period of political instability that frustrates most Australians.

The former treasurer was sworn in as Australia's 30th Prime Minister yesterday evening after a tumultuous few days.

The president reportedly told the leader of the USA ally that he had a better conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Morrison will replace Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who is expected to resign.

Hitherto infuriating, inexplicable and ridiculous, the Liberal leadership crisis last night turned sordid, absurd and pathetic as one of the two major institutions of Australian politics fought with itself openly and utterly incompetently.

"Both underlined the strength and depth of our alliance and the unbreakable friendship between Australia and the United States", a spokesman for Morrison said of the conversation. Morrison has ruled out calling an early general election but will face his first electoral test with a by-election for Turnbull's seat in Sydney.

"It was described as madness by many, so far as there has been chaos this week, it has been created by the wreckers".

The Opposition Leader Bill Shorten expressed his respect for the outgoing prime minister.

"We have people across the country who are suffering and look at what you're doing", he said, listing national woes including the worst drought in half a century that has forced some farmers to shoot their livestock.

Members of Australia's conservative Liberal Party are meeting at Parliament House to choose a new prime minister. "I relish it", he said after rising to the country's highest political role. He also secured an agreement with President Donald Trump for some 1,250 Iranian, Afghan and Pakistani refugees who had tried to reach Australia by boat to be transferred to the United States, a major step forward for attempts to resolve Australia's biggest global embarrassment.

Mr Turnbull's leadership was vulnerable because his government was trailing in opinion polls.

"Australian voters have strongly opposed changes of leadership mid-term, especially when they think these are not necessary", he said.

"Morrison is a social and economic conservative and has strong religious convictions".
