A Mi-8 helicopter has crashed in the north of Krasnoyarsk region, East Siberia, killing 18 people aboard, a source at the emergency services told TASS.

"There were three crew members and 15 passengers overseas the Mi-8 that belonged to Utair airline", an emergency services official told TASS news agency.

The doomed helicopter, operated by aviation company Utair, was carrying 15 oil workers and three crew.

The dead were working for a subsidiary of oil giant Rosneft in the remote Vankor oil field, which is above the Arctic Circle.

The incident occurred when a Russian-made Mi-8 aircraft knocked into the cargo of an adjacent helicopter as both were completing take-off in the Krasnoyarsk region, watchdog Rosaviatsia says.

It is believed the helicopter was taking workers to an oil well. The helicopter flew 2 kilometre before it crashed.

The second helicopter was undamaged and landed safely, the committee said.

Investigators are looking into all possible reasons for the crash including pilot error, the Russian daily newspaper said.

"The first take-off was carried out by an Mi-8 with an external cargo suspension without passengers on board", the ministry said in a statement. A criminal investigation is under way.

In April, a Mi-8 helicopter crashed in far eastern Russian Federation, killing six people.

A spokesman for the emergency team said two flight recorders had been found at the site of the crash.

The crash comes four months after another fatal accident involving an Mi-8 in eastern Russian Federation, which killed six people.
