Republicans and immigration hardliners have welcomed the Democratic shift on the issue, believing that it spells electoral victory for the GOP outside of Democratic enclaves like NY and California.

"All it's going to do is lead to massive, massive crime", Trump said in an interview with Fox Business that aired on Sunday.

"No special agent is going to stop me from talking".

His tweets follow Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of NY, take aim at the agency.

CBS has identified the men as agents from the Department of Homeland Security inspector general's office. But the agency has been criticized by liberal activists for its tactics, including workplace raids and the deportation of undocumented immigrants whose children are US citizens.

Progressive immigration rights activists - during both Republican and Democratic administrations - have come to view ICE as a rogue agency that terrorized immigrant communities.

While Philadelphia is a so-called sanctuary city, officials had maintained that they would honor Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers as long as they included a criminal arrest order signed by a judge.

Across the nation, ICE has never seemed more visible as anger continues over the separation of families under the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance" policy.

"I don't think ICE today is working as intended", Gillibrand said on CNN Thursday evening. "I know people aren't sympathetic to deportation officers, but they have a rough time with this too and I think more so under this administration". And she ridiculed protesters in Washington, D.C., who were calling for abolishment of ICE as "Jiffy Pop" on account of the "tin foil robes" they wore, which were meant to resemblethe foil blankets ICE is giving detained children.

President Donald Trump ordered the separations halted, but the details on what is next are being worked out.

"Well, I hope they keep thinking about it", Trump said. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., during Congress unsuccessful effort to pass comprehensive immigration reform in 2013-2014. "We should create something better, something different".

It's unclear in what fever dream Trump witnessed ICE's liberation of town after town from the clutches of MS-13, but ICE's competency is not in dispute: they have none. The president has twice visited that region to discuss the dangers of criminal immigrants, whom he has called "animals".

On his last day on the job, Acting ICE Director Thomas Homan pushed back Friday on the the calls from the left to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "Next it will be all police. Zero chance, It will never happen!" the president added.

Protest organizers and immigration advocacy groups say the marches - which are funded by groups like the ACLU and The Leadership Conference, according to CBS News - show that the issue is gaining traction in response to White House policies.

"Every country needs reasonable law enforcement on their borders".
