Taiwan says two USA warships pass through Taiwan Strait

Though such missions are not uncommon, both Taiwan and the USA made unusual public confirmations of the ships' passage over the weekend.

China claims Taiwan as its own and has never renounced the use of force to bring under its control what it sees as a wayward province.

An Indian official source on July 7 told Indian media that the name change made by Air India about Taiwan did not relate to the "One China" policy and that it was in alignment with global practices, reported the Times of India.

Flags of Taiwan and U.S. are placed for a meeting between U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce speaks and with Su Chia-chyuan, President of the Legislative Yuan in Taipei, Taiwan March 27, 2018.

The Chinese government had no immediately comment.

"U.S. Navy ships transit between the South China Sea and East China Sea via the Taiwan Strait and have done so for many years", said Brown.

Beijing also criticized the US efforts to foster the relationship with the Taiwanese government and its president Tsai Ing-wen, including the opening of a new office complex for the American Institute in Taiwan that works essentially as Washington's informal embassy due to the absence of formal diplomatic ties since 1949.

On April 25, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) ordered 34 airlines to describe Taiwan as part of China on their websites and in their promotional materials.

It has lured away four of Taiwan's diplomatic allies since Tsai came to power, leaving only 18 countries in the world that recognise Taipei over Beijing.

Such developments come amid rising frictions over what the USA considers unfair trading practices by China, the world's second-largest economy.

China has also been angered over recent warming relations between the US and Taiwan, after Trump signed legislation paving the way for mutual visits by top American officials and the USA government green-lighted a license required to sell cutting-edge submarine technology to Taipei.

U.S. Marines usually guard missions in countries with which Washington has formal diplomatic ties.

The US warships entered the Taiwan Strait on Saturday and were still in the waterway as of Saturday night, Taiwan's defense ministry reported. Even so, China expressed "grave concern" over the passage.

"Taiwan is a key "core interest" of Beijing and recently we see more strident resistance voiced out in Chinese state media against perceived USA moves to undermine such interest", Koh said. "And Taiwan is surely a litmus test for (Chinese President) Xi Jinping's repeated exhortation to protect China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity".
