Southern Ontario still under extreme heat warning

Couillard noted that the weather is expected to cool down by Friday but "we expect to have this kind of episode every year".

Overnight low temperatures are expected to be in the low 20s, except high teens in some rural areas, providing little or no relief from the heat.

"I would much rather err on the side of giving people a warning and telling them how to prepare. rather than not warning people and having them left with something they aren't prepared for", he says.

Sudbury has been under a heat warning since Friday.

The national forecaster says temperatures could reach the mid-30s with humidex values into the mid-40s, while some areas could see severe thunderstorms.

A heat warning issued for Toronto and the GTA remains in effect, with daytime highs of 32 C and 33 C in the forecast for the next two days.

"This setup will allow cooler and less humid air to flow from central Canada and into the Northeast and much of the Midwest", according to the report. "We are going to see a lovely weekend coming up with lower humidity but then we will see the temperatures going right back up into the 30s", he said.

Mr. Feltmate says that while one isolated event might be normal, the world and Canada are seeing more extreme weather events - patterns that can be attributed to climate change.

In response to the extended heat warning, the city has opened a number of cooling centres around Toronto.

Isolated adults, seniors, young children, people experiencing homelessness and people with certain mental health illnesses, chronic illnesses, heart and lung issues or limited mobility are at greater risk of heat-related illnesses. The Atlantic region's heat wave is expected to break midweek, and Southern Ontario's should only last until Friday.

"Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle".
