Netanyahu to Putin: remove Iran from Syria, Assad safe from Israel

On Sunday night, Syria said its air defense repelled an Israeli sorties against the T4 air base in Homs province, where seven Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps personnel died in an April 9 attack that Damascus and Tehran also blamed on Israel.

"They (Russia) have an active interest in seeing a stable Assad regime and we in getting the Iranians out".

"We were afraid in the beginning to come (because we regarded Israelis) as Zionists and enemies", said one woman, who brought her son for treatment.

That position is shared by most U.S. lawmakers from both sides of the aisle, many of whom are now concerned that when President Donald Trump meets with Putin early next week, he might make some kind of deal that leaves Syria in the hands of the Russians, and their Iranian allies.

David Keyes, a Netanyahu spokesman, denied that the prime minister made that statement to Mr Putin.

"To our friends in Israel - be very careful making agreements with Russian Federation re Syria that affect USA interests", said the former Republican presidential candidate.

"Every visit like this is an opportunity for us to act together and try and stabilize the situation in our region and increase security and increase stability", Netanyahu said.

Israel carried out frequent incursions into neighboring Syria, typically to strike Iranian or Hezbollah targets.

Since turning the tide of Syria's civil war by intervening militarily in 2015 on Mr Al Assad's behalf, Russian Federation has turned a blind eye to scores of Israeli air strikes against Iranian and Hezbollah deployments or arms transfers, while making clear it wanted Mr Al Assad kept immune.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in an interview with Italian newspaper Il Giornale published Wednesday that Moscow hopes that Israel and Iran will both display caution and avoid a showdown. He said a stray drone was "not common". Israel worries that he could deploy troops or allow his Iranian and Hezbollah allies to set up emplacements near Israeli lines.

While Russia does not seem to have accepted Israel's demand for Iran to be completely removed from Syria, it has agreed to force the Islamic Republic's forces and proxies to leave the areas closest to the border with Israel.

Israel has signalled openness to eventual ties with Mr Al Assad, a tacit acknowledgement that he is re-consolidating power as he routs Syria's rebels.

Under Assad family rule, Syria held direct negotiations with Israel in the United States in 2000 and indirect talks mediated by Turkey in 2008, discussions predicated on a full or partial return of the Golan. "We shot it down and we will continue to take strong action against any trickle [of fire] and any infiltration into Israel's airspace or territory".

Here is a video of the Patriot being fired at the drone.

Michael Harari, a paediatrician at Ziv hospital, said medical infrastructure in southwest Syria has largely broken down, and groups of Syrian children are brought to the facility every two to three weeks.

Keeping a doctor's appointment in Israel, Syrian children and their mothers stepped across a tense Golan Heights border in the dead of night under the watchful gaze of Israeli soldiers.
