Florida beach reopens after rare, double shark attack

The town of Fernandina Beach, Florida, reopened its beaches to swimmers Saturday, a day after two people were injured minutes apart in "alleged shark bite incidents", the city government said.

Dustin Theobald, 30, and his son Emerson had been surfing at Fernandina Beach on Friday afternoon when the shark latched onto his foot, leaving him with several four-inch lacerations and puncture wounds.

"He yelled, he like went down and he started hopping and he looked over at me and goes 'I got bit, I got bit, ' he started motioning toward the beach", she said.

According to the Jacksonville ABC, two for people who are bitten are 17-year-olds and 30-year-old man.

All beaches in the area were closed with double red flags positioned at beach entrances and signs saying: "Water closed to public due to potentially risky marine life". "I$3 reached back to my foot and I guess grabbed its head". Three minutes later, while attending to the first victim, the department received a report of a second biting incident. A few minutes after Theobald's attack, rescuers heard that a teenager had been bitten in the foot in shallow water about a mile away.

Both victims are recovering in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Of 88 unprovoked shark bites that the Florida Museum of Natural History documented around the globe past year, more than one third took place along the shores of Florida, the shark attack capital of the world. He said it was 4 to 5 feet long.

From 2007 to 2016, a total of 243 attacks were reported including one fatality, according to the Florida Museum International Shark Attack File.
