Chicago Cubs acquire lefty Cole Hamels in trade with Texas Rangers

Cole Hamels goes from last place to first place when he joins the Chicago Cubs during this weekend's series at St. Louis.

In the midst of a relatively weak trade market for starting pitching, the Cubs were one of the teams pursuing Blue Jays lefty J.A. Happ, whom the New York Yankees acquired earlier Thursday from the Blue Jays.

On the year, his first with the Cubs, Chatwood now has a 4.98 ERA over 94.0 innings and 19 starts. The lefty said he wasn't sure yet when he would make his first start for Chicago.

Hamels is in the midst of perhaps the worst year of his career, going 5-9 with a 4.72 ERA in 20 starts with the Rangers. He's given up 16 home runs over 59 innings at home and 7 home runs over 55 1/3 innings on the road. Chatwood walked six batters in the Cubs' 7-6 walk-off win over Arizona on Thursday, giving him 85 walks in 94 innings.

Chicago Cubs pitcher Yu Darvish posted a photo on his Instagram Thursday, saying that he couldn't wait to see Hamels.

For his career, he has a 152-111 record with an impressive 3.43 ERA and 2341 strikeouts.

The 34-year-old was drafted by the Phillies in the first round of the 2002 Major League Baseball draft and debuted with Philadelphia in 2006.

The trade was reported yesterday, and Cole Hamels gave his now-former Rangers teammates hugs as he left the ballpark during the game against the A's, but now the Cole Hamels trade is official.

In his last home start for Texas before the deadline, Hamels allowed seven runs on Monday night against Oakland. The Cubs referenced that no-hitter in a tweet after the trade was announced.

It has been a hard few years for the veteran not being able to lead the Rangers to a World Series.
