Carmelo Anthony Traded To Atlanta Hawks

Sports reports the Hawks will receive Anthony from the Thunder and Justin Anderson from the 76ers, the Thunder will receive Dennis Schroder from the Hawks and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot from the 76ers, and the 76ers will receive Mike Muscala from Hawks. The Hawks are expected to buy out Melo and make him an unrestricted free agent.

The Rockets have been in flux this offseason, losing defensive stalwart and team leader Trevor Ariza in free agency to Phoenix, along with Luc Mbah a Moute, who returned to the Clippers after one season in Houston. The Hawks' offense had the most possessions per game run through their pick-and-roll ball-handler last season.

As of now, the expectation is that Anthony will land in Houston, where he probably will be the starting power forward alongside Chris Paul, James Harden, P.J. Tucker and Clint Capela. But the Thunder save $107 ($145.4m) million through the trade, compared to about $90 million ($122.3m) if they waived him via the stretch provision, stretching his salary over the next three seasons.

Anthony was acquired from the New York Knicks before training camp opened last season, and waived his no-trade clause. The Hawks at one point considered Schroder their future cornerstone, but they switched directions and drafted Oklahoma's Trae Young in the first round of this year.

In 67 games last season, Schroder averaged a career-best 19.4 points per game, in addition to 6.2 assists and 3.1 rebounds. The charges against Schroder were recommended to be upgraded from misdemeanor to felony.

The Thunder could've waived Anthony or used the stretch provision on his contract instead of a trade, but made a decision to move him for a pair of players who could be useful on next season's team. Young was selected No. 5 overall by the Mavericks then traded to the Hawks.

"A Heat agreement with Anthony could assure a Heat return by Wade, a close friend who now is a free agent", he wrote. Anthony averaged 16.2 points, shot 40.4% from the field and connected on 35.7% of his threes.
