American killed in Bahamas boat explosion ID'd as Tennessee woman

An American woman in the Bahamas celebrating her 15th wedding anniversary was killed and nine others were injured, including another USA woman who lost both legs, when a tour boat exploded Saturday morning off the coast of Exuma.

ABC News reported that one of the 10 Americans, who has not been identified, who was on the boat was killed.

Stacey Bender, Stefanie's mother, suffered multiple broken bones and internal injuries, while Brooke Schaffer and Paul Bender, Stefanie's sister and step-father, escaped the incident with bruises and cuts. Another boat nearby was able to rescue numerous passengers.

The news is especially devastating for her family, George told ABC News, because Schaffer "danced her whole childhood". Stefanie Schaffer, 22, of Rutland, Vt., lost both of her legs. They are being treated at hospitals in Pinellas County.

A GoFundMe page was created by the Schaffer family on Sunday to raise funds for medical and travel expenses. "The kind words and prayers are very much needed and appreciated". "This is a sad day for Exuma and a sad day for our American friends".

Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion.

The tragedy shocked a member of Parliament for Exumas, Chester Cooper, who took to Facebook and said an American woman had died in the explosion.

Video of the explosion's aftermath was shot by a passenger on another tour boat that came to the rescue. Jones' two sons were on the boat but also survived the explosion, according to UK Daily Mail.
