Air strike on IS-held area kills dozens in Syria: Observatory

Most of the civilians were Iraqi, Observatory Director Rami Abdulrahman said.

On April 19, the Iraqi Air Force conducted strikes against Islamic State forces near the Syrian-Iraqi border, in coordination with the Syrian government in Damascus.

Just across the river, the Syrian government waged its own campaign against the jihadis with the help of Russian Federation and Iran.

US-led coalition carried out the air strike near the town of Albu Kamal east of the Euphrates River.

On December 14, 2017, Syria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates stated that the US-led coalition was indeed targeting civilian facilities and providing Daesh terrorists with cover.

Iraq, which considers itself an ally of both rival factions, has also launched airstrikes against ISIS in eastern Syria.

The US coalition has been operating in Syria since 2014, supporting Kurdish-led groups in northern Syria in the fight against Daesh.

The crowded lines of control and areas of operation have occasionally led to clashes between different forces fighting ISIS.

US -backed Kurdish-led fighters in Syria have been on the offensive against IS in a region that borders Iraq for months.

The Daesh-held area of eastern Syria near the border with Iraq was targeted, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

. Most of the civilians killed were Iraqis, it added.

The Syrian government has repeatedly accused the USA of targeting civilians in Syria, while urging the United Nations to put an end to the coalition's military operations in Syria. In its latest offensive, the Syrian government has managed to mostly secure the country's restive southwest in a lightning offensive that saw the Syrian flag raised Thursday in Daraa, which was one of the last rebel-held cities in the country.

Islamic State was largely defeated in most of the territory it controlled in both countries previous year, but fighters still operate in the desert near the border.
