The incident is affecting Visa services across Europe.

Because Visa run a lot of the payment systems, all credit and debit cards could be affected by the problems.

'We apologise to all our partners & especially to Visa cardholders.

In a statement posted online, the card payments company said: "There is now a disruption of service in taking payments from VISA".

Any transactions carried out across the United Kingdom will not complete after one of the biggest problems with the card payment system was confirmed.

A Visa spokesperson confirmed the outage today (June 1) and said the company is investigating the cause while trying to resolve it "as quickly as possible".

The problem affected large sections of the United Kingdom and Europe.

Long lines were reported at train stations on Friday and businesses lost sales because customers' cards were declined, MarketWatch reported.

One Twitter user called Sandra Foy tweeted Paymentsense asking "are we going to be compensated for the loss of money?".

Meanwhile, some companies are resorting to retro imprint and signature machines in order for customers to still use their cards.
