Pogba Earns France 2-1 a Victory as VAR Technology Plays Part

Antoine Griezmann went down after a tackle in the penalty box in the second half of the Group C fixture.

"I know how to use him", the coach, who captained France to their only World Cup title on home soil in 1998, told a news conference.

Today, France and Australia kick off Group C at 10:00 am GMT for the first of four games on the first Saturday of the tournament.

France's forward Antoine Griezmann controls the ball during the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup Group C football match between France and Australia at the Kazan Arena in Kazan on June 16.

France needed the help of the first World Cup penalty awarded by Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and a deflected Paul Pogba goal to get their campaign underway with a scrappy 2-1 win over Australia here Saturday. When I felt the contact, I thought it was a penalty.

Meanwhile, Mbappe made history at kick-off by becoming the youngest French player, at 19 and six months, to start a World Cup game.

"They have offensive potential", Deschamps said of Australia.

The Uruguayan referee then changed his mind after looking at the VAR replay and pointed to the spot, and Griezmann scored.

"It's going to be a very hard match", Modric said afterwards.

'I am with the France squad, I don't want to speak about the future of the club and all this, ' Pogba said. The 33 year old is an inspiration to both young Australian footballers and aspiring beard growers alike.

"We have to play more as a team and respect those games".

Australia leveled the game from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute, but Paul Pogba scored the game victor with just eight minutes left to play in regulation.

Deschamps said: "I saw in the Spain Portugal game the first two goals could be allowed or they could be denied".

2018 marks Peru's return to the World Cup finals for the first time in almost 40 years.

Often the hand ball rule is contested on the grounds of intent, however, the French defender holds the rare distinction of his case being stonewall and only for a late Paul Pogba, he would of put France on the early backfoot in group C.

I was not the most successful point to see the episode with the penalty, but I think the penalty wasn't there. "When 11 players are thinking the same football, it makes things easier", he added.
