One person died following bus crash on 401

Canadian police say a bus ran off the road in eastern Ontario and at least 24 people have been hospitalized, four with life-threatening injuries.

A Code Orange was declared at Kingston General Hospital shortly after a tour bus crash occurred at around 2:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon on Highway 401 westbound near Prescott, west of Blue Church Rd. There were 37 passengers on board the tour bus including a driver and tour guide.

The bus is painted with the logo of the US -based company Union Tour Express. According to police, four passengers suffered life threatening injuries and twenty other passengers sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene to find a bus in a ditch alongside highway 401 near Prescott, Ontario, some 90 kilometres (53 miles) south of Ottawa, provincial police spokeswoman Tina Hunt said.

The hospital in nearby Brockville said on Twitter that it had received five patients, all in critical condition.

There has been no official word from authorities as to how many survived the crash, although it is known that a number of people are in critical and serious condition. "The passengers' side of the bus got quite heavily damaged, thus all the injuries".

"Our teams are working hard with the folks that we've received and there's all hands on deck for the moment", she said.

Shawn O'Neil, operations manager at the Prescott Ambulance Station, said there are about 27 patients from the tour bus crash.
