Aleksandar Kolarov said Serbia "won't be doing the maths yet" after his brilliant second-half free-kick grabbed a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica, with the Balkan side drawing first blood in their World Cup group in Samara on Sunday (Jun 17).

Brazil are the favourites to top Group E this year and a win over Serbia and Switzerland will help Costa Rica take the second spot.

The Eagles defeated Costa Rica 1-0 in their World Cup opener Sunday, secured by Aleksandar Kolarov's curling free kick that got past veteran goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

But after David Guzman was handed a yellow card, Kolarov curled the free kick over the wall and Navas, who plays for Real Madrid, was not able to reach it.

Excluding penalty shoot-outs, Los Ticos were one of only three sides - with Germany and the Netherlands - to remain unbeaten in the last edition of this tournament, topping a group that also contained Uruguay, England and Italy before being knocked out by the Oranje in the quarter-final.

"It's especially important that we have three points in the bag", Kolarov said. Costa Rica's top scorer Marco Urena suffered facial fractures about a month ago.

The 44-year-old admitted he had been under pressure in the build-up to the game.

Serbia will next face Switzerland on Friday, while Costa Rica will face Brazil on the same day.

Despite being highly rated after helping Serbia to win the under-20s World Cup in 2015, Milinkovic-Savic only has four caps due to failing to impress former coach Slavoljub Muslin, who lost his job partly because he didn't make the most of the midfielder.

"I'm friends with Kolarov who scored an wonderful goal today, and (Nemanja) Matic, these guys", he said.
