"I'm gonna say one thing: "F*** Trump!" he exclaimed".

The Band's Visit, the Broadway musical based on an Israeli film, swept the Tony Awards on Sunday night, taking home 10 prizes - including best musical - at the ceremony in NY.

"I'm gonna say one thing: F-k Trump", De Niro shouted, raising his arms into the air as the crowd cheered for almost half a minute. "It's no longer 'down with Trump.' It's 'f**k Trump!'" he added.

In a mesmerising moment, Melody Herzfeld, the heroic drama teacher who nurtured numerous young people demanding change following the February school shooting in Parkland, Florida, was honoured from the Tony Award stage.

Ari'el Stachel, the California-born son of an Israeli-Yemeni father and an Ashkenazi mother from NY, won the award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance as a romantic Egyptian trumpeter in "The Band's Visit". Two expletives earned him a standing ovation and a shower of admiration from the liberal crowd.

Radio City Music Hall was awash in tears when the drama students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS in Parkland, Fla., sang "Seasons of Love" from "Rent", a show written by Jonathan Larson, who, like the kids caught up in the February massacre at the school, died far too young.

The Tony Awards show was seen by some six million Americans past year. The epic and expansive British import - which looks set to be a multihour fixture off Times Square for decades - won the Tony Award for best new play and honors for its British director, John Tiffany.

"We are all sacred".

The 2007 film, The Band's Visit, was critically acclaimed when it was released in Israel, receiving 8 Ophir Awards, including best film, best director, best lead actor for Gabbai and best lead actress for the late Ronit Elkabetz.

Many congrats to Stachel on his first Tony win!

The Band's Visit marks Stachel's Broadway debut. He continued, "I want any kid who is watching to know that your biggest obstacle may turn into your objective".
