The games will mark the first time the MLB has scheduled games in Europe and the league underlined its intention to "establish a long-term footprint in the city".

The league has, however, played games in Mexico, Japan, Puerto Rico and Australia.

Other major American sports leagues, such as the National Football League and the National Basketball Association, have already brought matches to London.

The Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees rivalry has been renewed - and it could stay that way for a long time. They are excited about the chance to meet new fans, and showcase the game they love. The estimated capacity of London Stadium for the series will be 55,000. "We think that London is the ideal place and we're excited about bringing over one of the great rivalries".

Red Sox owner John W. Henry said his team and the Yankees had been discussing the possibility of playing in London for several years.

The NFL has played regular-season games in London since 2007, holding 18 games at Wembley and three at Twickenham.

"The great thing about London is there are various sporting events taking place every day of the week", Khan told ESPN. There were significant challenges that had to be overcome.

The London Stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympic Games. We could not be happier that Commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. has been able to make this a reality. Two of the most recognizable teams are once again two of the best. "We expect an exciting and intense pair of games and appreciate the significance of representing our sport in such a meaningful way". The venue will host Major League Baseball games in 2019 and 2020.

Each Yankee and Red Sox player will receive an additional GBP 44,000 (USD 60,000) to play in London. "It won't just be a great live experience for those who get a ticket for the London Stadium, but also I am sure that the match, the game on TV or radio or on the web will be fantastic as well".
