North Korean Leader Meets With China's Xi in Second Meeting

His visit will come just a day after Kim returned from China, his second trip to the neighboring country in six weeks to meet with President Xi Jinping.

On Monday in Washington, Trump was briefed by members of the US delegation led by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who returned to Washington on the weekend from a two-day visit to China, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters on Monday.

USA officials have been pressing Kim to free the three remaining American detainees as a gesture of sincerity before the summit, the first-ever meeting of sitting US and North Korean leaders.

Noting that this was Kim's second trip to China in just over 40 days, Xi praised the state of "strategic communication" between China and North Korea, formally known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

North Korean state media said Kim was "very pleased" that the relationship with China was reaching a high point, and North Korea would cooperate with China more actively as the situation on the Korean peninsula changed.

Kim's trip to the northeastern port city of Dalian was his second visit to China since March, highlighting efforts by the Cold War-era allies to mend relations that have chilled as Beijing has supported United Nations sanctions over Pyongyang's nuclear activities. A North Korean foreign ministry spokesman warned the claims are a "dangerous attempt" to ruin a budding detente on the Korean Peninsula after the summit between Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

The Yomiuri ShimbunLeaders of Japan, China and South Korea are expected to focus on North Korea's denuclearization at a trilateral summit in Tokyo on Wednesday morning.

Albright herself visited North Korea in 2000 for a meeting with the current leader's father, Kim Jong Il, attempting to put an end to the elder Kim's nuclear aspirations. "Kim Jong Un is looking for advice, support and encouragement", he told CNN. He said a political resolution of tensions on the Korean Peninsula and denuclearisation should proceed in stages, with all sides moving in concert.

Xi held talks with Kim and hosted a welcome banquet for him.

The young leader stirred up tensions on the Korean Peninsula with his nuclear weapons testing and purging of several key officials close to Beijing, including his uncle, Jang Song Thaek.

"In a cordial and friendly atmosphere, the top leaders of the two parties and the two countries had an all-round and in-depth exchange of views", said the state-run news agency.

Kim met with the Chinese leader Monday and today in Dalian, China, according to state news agency Xinhua.

At the airport in Dalian also noticed the planes, which are believed to be used by senior Chinese officials. As with the previous Xi-Kim meeting, there was no advance notice given, and the visit was only confirmed after Kim had left.

Trump struck a positive tone in announcing the call earlier on Tuesday, calling Xi "my friend" and pledging in a post on Twitter that "good things will happen" on trade.

"Trump affirmed his commitment to ensuring that the trade and investment relationship between the United States and China is balanced and benefits American businesses and workers", it said.
