Mike Pompeo takes oath as Secretary of State

Trump notably did not visit the State Department during the tenure of Pompeo's predecessor, Rex Tillerson, and his presence on Wednesday suggests that he and the White House are prepared to usher in a new era behind their new top diplomat.

"The United States diplomatic corps needs to be in every corner, every stretch of the world, executing missions on behalf of this country, and it is my humble, noble undertaking to help you achieve that", he said.

"We must not forget the millions of North Koreans who continue to suffer under one of the most repressive and abusive governments in the world", she said in a statement.

Pompeo was confirmed last Thursday, and was officially sworn-in hours later by Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito before he embarked on his first foreign trip as secretary.

Pompeo was approved by the U.S. Senate for the position of Secretary on 26 April, then immediately went to the talks in the headquarters of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in Brussels, and then visited Saudi Arabia, Israel and Jordan.

Trump has been a frequent critic of the department and its work, but Pompeo maintains close ties to the president.

In every country he traveled to, Pompeo paid brief visits to the US embassies for "meet and greet" receptions with staffers, a common activity for visiting secretaries of state. Tillerson later made the receptions a routine.

The former oilman left the State Department, which includes more than 13,000 foreign service officers, in disarray after many career diplomats quit and morale among the ranks plummeted.

"When I say we're going to do this, I mean we", Pompeo said. Reporters traveling with Pompeo were allowed to watch him arrive but were ushered out of the room before he spoke. He returned late Monday. Trump is expected to hold a summit with Kim in the coming weeks as the US pushes for denuclearization in North Korea. "The American people are counting on us to get this right". Trump offered an example Wednesday of possible feelings of kinship with the former GOP congressman from Kansas. Pompeo is promising to bring back what he calls the State Department's swagger.

A former ambassador to Qatar, Dana Shell Smith, said members of the Foreign Service would not soon forget the role played by Pompeo in stoking unsubstantiated charges, including that the Obama administration failed to rush military assets to respond to the attack.

"It's time to solve this once and for all", Pompeo said.

Pompeo's defenders say his relentless focus on the incident was driven by his concern for diplomats' safety.
