Mets manager: 'We feel like we failed Matt Harvey'

Matt Harvey will be designated for assignment by the Mets, the team's GM Sandy Alderson said before Friday's game at Citi Field.

Per ESPN, the front office will now have a week to trade or hand him his outright release.

"My guess", Alderson said", is that there are people out there who are willing to take a shot on Matt Harvey". "We tried things. It's more of a feeling that, when your players don't succeed, you feel it". After being moved to the bullpen, Harvey expressed his displeasure and is time with the Mets was running out.

When Harvey declined the request, it was an easy decision for the Mets to designate the 29-year-old for assignment. I see him ending up with the Angels, actually.

I try not to view athletes in a personal way. Callaway said that they feel like they failed Harvey.

He started the All-Star Game at Citi Field that July and was 9-5 with a 2.27 ERA when he tore an elbow ligament during a game against Detroit on August 24. It was a proud and riveting moment that I refuse to let vanish just because he couldn't get his career on track following multiple surgeries and an awkward relationship with his team.

Harvey was a "tremendous prospect at the time I arrived", recounted Alderson. "He's a human being".

It's more complicated than that, and Harvey never did himself any favors by being hard - a moody problem child for both his own team and the media that documented his every misstep, splashing him on the back page through the highs and lows. The streaking-comet brilliance, fueled by New York's unconditional love, followed by the crash-and-burn curtain drop, brought on by Harvey persuading Terry Collins to let him close.

But Harvey's career stalled after Tommy John surgery and thoracic outlet syndrome surgery, and he was at the center of numerous off-field controversies.

Since that World Series burnout, Harvey is 9-19 with a 5.93 ERA, a resume that might have earned him a spring-training invite last winter. With AP Photos. The New York Mets are cutting ties with former ace Matt Harvey. The only remaining cause, according to doctors, is overuse of the shoulder and repeated stress on the brachial plexus. It all started in Game 5 of the 2015 World Series when he forced his way back on the field and accelerated from there.

The last two seasons were a mess for him. This is not someone who hasn't pitched well recently. I hope he finds his way back to being the man he expects to be.
