Conte accepts Chelsea´s Champions League hopes are fading

Huddersfield, who are 17th in the table, must earn at least a draw at Chelsea to secure their Premier League status for next season but a defeat at Stamford Bridge would drag the Terriers into the relegation fight ahead of their final league game.

A 1-1 draw at Chelsea ensured David Wagner's side retained their top-flight status after coming up from the SkyBet Championship previous year.

Rafael Benitez, Manager of Newcastle United greets Chris Hughton, Manager of Brighton and Hove Albion prior to the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion at St. James' Park on December 30, 2017 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

The 25-year-old has scored 43 goals in all competitions since arriving from Roma last summer, a return that has seen him heavily linked with Spanish giants Real Madrid, who face Liverpool in the Champions League later this month.

Huddersfield's players secured another season in the Premier League because "they always believed the impossible is possible", said boss David Wagner.

Kane proved Tottenham's talisman once more as his 39th goal of the season was enough to move Spurs above Liverpool into third. "It can happen in the past".

But with an FA Cup final still to look forward to against Mourinho's Manchester United, Conte insists his second and, in all likelihood, final season at Chelsea has not been a write off. They were eliminated in the last 16 (of the Champions League) against Paris St Germain.

But the German warned that Brighton, who have only pride to play for after securing their Premier League status, could prove unsafe opponents.

Marcos Alonso has been directly involved in nine Premier League goals this season (7 goals, 2 assists), more than any other defender. Last season after a 10th place we won the league. It was difficult. We worked very hard, but we won it.

"Now probably we can finish fifth".

'I think I'm living with this speculation since the start of this season.

"At the same time, we have to try. I think we did this", he added.

"I'm the last person to judge the moment of the club". With the loss of two points against Huddersfield Town, Chelsea's situation of finishing in the top four has become trickier.

Conte refused to appraise his performance and declined to say what it would take to close the gap to champions Manchester City, insisting that was not a question to be answered now.

"It is very hard to comment on any speculation also because there have been speculations around me from the start of the season, after our first game against Burnley".

Liverpool's 1-0 defeat at Chelsea last week has ensured that, just like a year ago, the Merseysiders' fight for Champions League qualification has gone down to the final game.
