Angels' Albert Pujols eclipses 3000 hits, passes Pirates legend Roberto Clemente

Pujols is batting.274 with 5 home runs and 16 RBI in his last 26 games.

The Los Angeles Angels' future Hall of Famer reached 3,000 career hits during Friday's game against the Seattle Mariners.

He also becomes the second player from the Dominican Republic to record 3,000 hits, joining Adrian Beltre.

Los Angeles Angels' Albert Pujols, second from left, hugs third base coach Dino Ebel, left, while first base coach Alfredo Griffin carries first base, after Pujols singled for his 3,000th career hit, against the Seattle Marine.

He then came to the plate three times with the chance to hit the mark in front of his standing home crowd. "It just happened tonight", Pujols said.

Few sluggers in baseball history have been more versatile than Pujols, who joins Aaron as the only players with 600 doubles and 600 homers among their 3,000 hits.

Ichiro Suzuki reached 3,000 hits in 2016 and also accomplished it on the road.

He is also only the second Dominican born Major League Baseball player to reach 3,000 hits, the first being Beltre. I hit a long fly ball, and they caught it right at the wall.

Cabrera is sitting on 2,666 hits, while Cano has registered 2,408 with plenty more to come, in his estimation.

Pujols, who was raised in Santo Domingo before moving to NY and Missouri as a teenager, is the sixth foreign-born player to get 3,000 hits along with Suzuki, Rod Carew, Rafael Palmeiro and Roberto Clemente, who also had exactly 3,000 hits. After Cabrera is Robinson Cano, almost 600 hits shy of the mark. He has the most career home runs of any player in the major leagues with 620.

Pujols is the second player to collect his 3,000th hit in Seattle after Rafael Palmeiro's double in 2005 at Safeco Field.

Pujols, 38, is in his seventh season with the American League club, in a 10 year, $240 million contract through the end of the 2021 season.

All signs are that Ohtani will return the mound for the Angels on Sunday.
