UN Security Council Meets About Syria As Inspectors Prepare To Head In

In response to the allegations, Syria said it has invited the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to investigate the suspected poison gas attack, which opposition activists say killed 40 people and wounded hundreds over the weekend.

Shamanov denied on Tuesday that the Syrian government used chemical weapons and asserted that a USA strike in Syria would amount to a violation of the country's sovereignty.

U.S. President Donald Trump (2nd-R) speaks in the Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington, April 9, 2018, at the start of a meeting with military and national security leaders. A Navy destroyer, the USS Donald Cook, was underway in the eastern Mediterranean.

A Syrian air base was struck by missiles a little more than 24 hours after the alleged chemical attack, an airstrike that Syria and Russian Federation have blamed on Israel.

The attack in Douma happened late on Saturday amid a resumed offensive by Syrian government forces after the collapse of a truce with the Army of Islam rebel group.

The key difference between the two drafts is that the USA one would mandate an inquiry to lay blame for chemical weapons attacks in Syria, while the Russian draft would require investigators to report to the Security Council, which would then attribute responsibility.

Officials said Trump had been viewing the trip unenthusiastically, though he'd been advised that his presence at the summit would provide an important symbol of American commitment to the region.

The U.S. has also requested that the U.N. Security Council vote Tuesday afternoon on a resolution calling for a new investigation into the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

Russian Federation has presented a third draft resolution that would support an investigation by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, but would not create a mechanism to identify the perpetrators of chemical attacks.

Mr Kinzinger added: "Assad is creating chaos, Assad is chaos".

The Russian Ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, traded barbs with US Ambassador Nikki Haley at a Security Council meeting on Monday, saying a US military response could have "grave repercussions".

At the meeting, Britain's UN Ambassador Karen Pierce said Russian Federation was not authorised to carry out an investigation on behalf of the security council.

First, on Saturday, government forces carried out another chemical weapons attack at Douma, east of Damascus, killing dozens of people, including children.

Trump on Monday warned of a quick, forceful response once responsibility for the attack was established.

The war in Syria has become more complicated and deadly in the past days - just as it appeared to be coming to a conclusion with a military victory for the government and President Bashar Assad still in power.

The Aquitaine is equipped with 16 cruise missiles and 16 surface-to-air missiles.

Still, Monday's comments were made less than a week after Trump began publicly announcing plans for a full US military withdrawal from Syria.

"The attack shows clearly that Syria continues to possess lethal chemical weapons capabilities and even to manufacture new ones".

The attack comes nearly exactly a year after a chemical atrocity in the northern Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun killed dozens of people.

The Foreign Secretary said: "Hugely disappointing that Russian Federation vetoed the proposal at the United Nations for an independent investigation into Syrian chemical attacks".
