Uber had argued that France should have sought the European Commission's approval for a new taxi law, which contained measures on taxis and mobility apps, including one that said only official taxis could use geolocation technology to show available cars.

On March 26, ride-hailing company Grab announced it would integrate Uber's ride-sharing and food delivery business in the region into its platform, making it the largest such service in Southeast Asia. Uber still uses its service with professional licensed drivers in France, which is not affected by the ruling. "Instead we needed to listen to what drivers told us they needed, and shape the new app alongside them". "In jurisdictions where Uber has good political relationships, it adds value but they also pick up all of Uber's baggage". There are also challenges with popularizing the services especially since Americans are not as accustomed to driving as they are to pedaling.

"I had a chance to spend a couple of evenings with him, and really talk through his vision for the business and our vision, and saw a lot of alignment", Rzepecki said, while noting Uber's rough road previous year.

"The Workforce Singapore and NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute have been working closely with the PHC BSOs (Booking Service Operators) and the National Private Hire Vehicle Association to offer employment assistance to affected drivers and employees", he said.

The ride-hailing firm said the redesign of the app used by its drivers was part of plans to correct "missteps of the past".

Speaking of the background to the deal announced today, he said: "When we first began talking to Uber they were going through an extremely hard time, with negative headlines each week and a massive change in leadership". "We focused too much on growth and not enough on the people who made that growth possible".

"Combining Jump's track record of product innovation and city partnerships with Uber's scale, operational excellence, and resources will allow us to make a global impact faster than if we were to pursue our vision alone". "It sits at the centre of the driver experience, but after a redesign two years ago, it was already showing its age".

Khosrowshahi even tried out the new app in a video - and showed how hard it is to drive with a passenger in the back seat, the app pinging with updates, and a map displaying confusing directions. With the help of drivers, Uber's engineers found and fixed 4,000 bugs in the app. Among the new design elements, drivers will now get a new Earnings Tracker, new notifications system, a revamped Driver profile page and more.

The app will also feature a new Status Bar to showcase updates on market conditions around a driver and opportunities for more trips nearby.

Update, 11:45 a.m.: Adds comment from Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi at a livestreamed event and additional background information.
