Three points including OT victor in Game 1 — Artemi Panarin

Phiipp Grubauer stopped 23 of the 27 shots he faced in the Washington Capitals' Game 1 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Only one team spent less time short-handed this season than Columbus, but first-period penalties put pressure on a penalty-killing unit that ranked 30th on the road.

None of that seemed to faze a team accustomed to overcoming injuries and digging out of deficits. The penalty kill isn't much better, but at least the Jackets don't give up a lot of power plays. "That tonight was one of those games where we talked to each other, we pumped each other up, we felt good and it never felt like we were going to lose this one". The Blue Jackets then tied it on a power-play goal from Vanek 1:31 into the third period.

"That cost us the game", Wilson said. That's a critical moment.

If Kadri does get suspended it would be the second of the young postseason as Los Angeles Kings defenceman Drew Doughty was hit with a one game ban for an illegal check on Vegas Golden Knights William Carrier. Maybe pass up on that hit.

About five minutes into the second period, Columbus was granted a lifeline.

"There was no panic on the bench there", coach John Tortorella said.

How They Lose: Washington has been cursed by the post-season yips during the Ovechkin era, and the team needs to find some clutchness. They regularly get outshot as well. We're just doing it too often.

Ondrej Palat recorded a goal and two assists as top-seeded Tampa Bay beat visiting New Jersey in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal. Jones drew a tripping penalty on Andre Burakovsky that Washington coach Barry Trotz called unnecessary, nearly put the puck in his own net on the delayed penalty and then scored off a pass from Panarin on the ensuing power play with just 4:26 left in regulation.

After Seth Jones scored on a power play late in the third period to send the game to overtime, Panarin scored the game-winner by completing an incredible rush where he blew past Dmitry Orlov and then casually roofed a shot under the crossbar, beating Capitals goalie Phillip Grubauer from a sharp angle. This is a must win game and I expect the Capitals to come through with a full 60 minute effort. In October, Wilson and Capitals General Manager Brian MacLellan met with Department of Player Safety head George Parros in Calgary to help Wilson understand how to avoid supplemental discipline in the future.

Washington had their chances and did manage to swing Game 1 early. In Sergei Bobrovsky, the Jackets have a game-changer goalie. Pierre-Luc Dubois also played a key role in game one with two assists, including an assist on the overtime victor.

Like Wennberg, Kempny did not return to the game. "I was scared, I knew the visor cracked so I just wanted to know how my face was, but I was anxious about my eye first". Adding Ian Cole at the deadline gave an already deep blueline a veteran with Stanley Cup rings, a nice addition to a roster that's otherwise bereft of playoff success. "If I had to pick anybody in the league to go to the playoffs with, it would be him".
