Rams ship Tavon Austin to Cowboys for 6th-round pick

Austin was likely going to see even less action with the Rams addition of Brandin Cooks.

Tavon Austin was selected with the eighth overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. He'll get another opportunity in Dallas, where sources told NFL.com the team plans to utilize him with creative play-calls out of the backfield. In five years as a Ram, Austin scored 12 receiving touchdowns, 9 rushing touchdowns and three punt return touchdowns, but only once had more than 500 receiving yards in a season.

At age 28, Austin has appeared in 75 National Football League games with 50 starts.

The bad news is that Austin is averaging just 36 receptions and two touchdowns the last two seasons and has had no more than 509 receiving yards in a single season. Although his price tag makes him expendable, the former first round pick has a chance to prove himself as a valuable member of America's Team. But they made six trades during the draft, including five Saturday, and emerged with 11 players. He received almost $15 million in salary and roster bonuses last season, but never got integrated into McVay's offense after sitting out offseason workouts as he recovered from wrist surgery and then suffering a hamstring injury during training camp.

"Talked with Sean and we thought it was the best thing for us and Tavon", Snead said. But, I think you also want to be mindful of what a special, unique, person he his.

And with that, McVay said he wishes Austin well under the guidance of Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett and offensive coordinator Scott Linehan.
