Mueller Told Trump He Isn't a 'Criminal Target'

Mueller indicted Manafort in Gates past year on charges also unrelated to the 2016 election. Though prosecutors did not take a position on whether he should be locked up, they stressed that he had lied "repeatedly" to investigators.

The Washington Post story also says Mueller told Trump's lawyers that he is preparing a report about the president's actions while in office and potential obstruction of justice and that he needed to interview Trump to complete that phase of his investigation.

"This is not something that happened to him". "He put his personal interest ahead of the interest of justice".

The sentence handed down against van der Zwaan is within the bounds of what had been expected, given that earlier the judge had weighed the possibility of sentencing him to a maximum of six months behind bars.

"What I did was wrong". "I apologize to the court for my conduct". I apologise to the court. The stakes were comparatively low: van der Zwaan, who pleaded guilty to one count of (making false statements to the FBI), faced a maximum sentence of only six months.in van der Zwaan's case do not show any cooperation agreement with the special counsel, and neither Schwartz nor Weissman made any reference to ongoing cooperation by van der Zwaan as a mitigating factor in his sentencing.

His defense attorneys begged for the judge not to give him any prison time and asked for him to be sentenced to a minimum-security federal prison in Pennsylvania, though that is to be determined.

Van der Zwaan, 33, is married to the daughter of prominent Russian billionaire German Khan, founder of the privately owned Alfa Bank. Mueller's team questioned van der Zwaan last November during its investigation into Manafort and Gates, according to Newsweek. It remains possible that the campaign had nothing to do with Russian Federation, but that Trump, spurred on by the crippling insecurity that is the driving force behind everything else he's ever done in his life, obstructed justice anyway. In response to the Post's report, Jay Sekulow, one of Trump's lawyers, said the team does not "discuss real or alleged conversations between our legal team and the Office of Special Counsel". A few weeks later, as he re-entered the country, federal authorities confiscated his passport. Trump has publicly expressed willingness to be interviewed, but reports indicate elements of his legal team have advised strongly against him doing so.

Van der Zwaan worked closely with Manafort and Gates in 2012, before their involvement in the Trump campaign, when they were serving as political consultants for Ukraine's former pro-Russia President Viktor Yanukovych on a report about former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

Lawyers for van der Zwaan, who lives in London, suggested that he'd been punished enough by having to live in limbo in the U.S.in recent months. Var der Zwaan was tasked with writing the report.

Updates with quotes from judge and lawyers.

"We count on people to tell us the truth".

Special counsel Robert Mueller is still reviewing Trump for possible obstruction of justice violations in the White House, the Post reported, citing sources close to the talks. Facing the same charges, in February Gates reached a plea deal with Mueller's prosectors.

Trump remains a "subject" of Mueller's investigation into whether his campaign team colluded with Russian Federation to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.
