Kim Jong-Un insists to meet with Trump in Pyongyang

In addition to back-channel discussions, American and North Korean officials have also met in a third country to hammer out the specifics for the unprecedented summit, CNN reported.

"The U.S. has confirmed that Kim Jong Un is willing to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsulaā€ˇ", said a second U.S. official.

South Korean officials had told Donald Trump that Mr Kim was willing to meet him to discuss de-nuclearisation, but the administration comments on Sunday mark the first time the U.S. has officially confirmed the information with North Korea itself.

Mr Pompeo is now awaiting confirmation as secretary of state in the coming weeks.

North Korea was "suffocating" under worldwide sanctions, Nikki Haley, the USA ambassador to the United Nations, said on Thursday, adding, "They need an out".

The preparations for the Trump-Kim summit are reported to be made through the channel that runs between the Central Intelligence Agency and the Reconnaissance General Bureau.

"It's likely that Kim Jongun comes with an alternate significance in mind", Abraham Denmark, a former senior US defense official claimed, noting a possible denuclearization deal seems to be contingent on the USA generating the most suitable conditions.

The talks will lay the groundwork for a meeting between Mr Pompeo and his North Korea counterpart, who is the head of the Reconnaissance General Bureau.

"It's a natural step in the right direction".

South Korea had conveyed a message from Kim indicating his willingness to pause his nuclear program during talks, but the US had not previously confirmed Kim's intentions directly from North Korea.

The meeting at the North Korean side of the border village of Panmunjom lasted for about three hours. However, he added that it does not make a positive outcome more likely.

CNN cited sources saying that Ulan Bator in Mongolia has been suggested as a possible neutral location for the meeting, although the North Koreans have been pushing to hold the talks in their capital, Pyongyang.
