Richard Sherman To Meet With 49ers On Saturday

Sherman, who has been meeting with the 49ers since Friday night, visited with team officials on Saturday.

Sherman's release was a cost-cutting move.

No player more than Sherman reflected the intensity of the 49ers-Seahawks rivalry when the NFC West rivals jostled from 2011-13 was at its zenith. Sherman's free agency will be complex as he is coming off of a serious Achilles injury, and he'll turn 30 years old before the beginning of next season. Condotta says that the team was interested in trying to get Sherman to agree to a pay cut but that he "balked" at such a proposal.

If healthy, Sherman, a four-time Pro Bowl selection who excels in physical man-to-man coverage, would be an ideal fit for the 49ers' 4-3 defense. He has since undergone surgery on his other Achilles.

The Bucs are certainly in need of cornerback help. While that still leaves room for at least one veteran, it would be odd for Detroit to go for a big-money veteran cornerback when there are much bigger needs elsewhere. The 49ers have over $60 million in salary cap space after re-signing six players this offseason, including Sherman's former Seahawks teammate Cassius Marsh, a defensive end. Saleh has implemented a defensive system that is similar to the Seahawks. He can now sign anywhere - including the Seahawks - without having to wait until the start of free agency on March 14.

The shedding of Sherman, Bennett and Lane means the Seahawks now have just eight players left on their roster from the 2013 team that won the Super Bowl under contract for the 2018 season - quarterback Russell Wilson, receiver Doug Baldwin, linebackers Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright, Chancellor, Thomas, Avril, and punter Jon Ryan.
