Poole's 3 at the buzzer sends MI to Hollywood

Michigan's freshman guard Jordan Poole squared up and drained a long 3-pointer at the final buzzer, giving third-seeded MI a heart-stopping 64-63 victory over No. 6 seed Houston.

A positive for the Cougars: They fouled less than typical this season.

Well, in addition to good work in practice, coach John Beilein had another reason to trust Poole: he made practically the exact same shot to win a game in high school.

Poole finished with eight points.

MI will play the victor of North Carolina/Texas A&M on Thursday at the Staples Center.

If Michigan makes more noise in the NCAA Tournament, Poole's shot will be compared to the Trey Burke triple against Kansas in the 2013 Sweet 16.

There were 17 lead changes and 12 ties, including 28-all at halftime. With less than four seconds remaining, MI trailed 63-61 with the ball.

Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman caught the ball past half court and thanks to a good inbounds pass, had room to work. But Houston missed both free throws, setting up the dramatic game-winning shot. Abdur-Rahkman was 2 of 8 from the field, including 0 of 5 from the arc.

"We have several variations and there are three or four options off of it", explained John Beilein, the MI coach.

Both teams traded big baskets in the final minutes.

Houston made a critical mistake here. Based in Los Angeles.

Three-seeded MI trailed sixth-seeded Houston 63-61 with 3.6 seconds left in their West Region matchup Saturday night.

Houston had a chance to clinch victory with 3.9 seconds remaining, but Devin Davis missed two free throws that would have given the Cougars a four-point lead.

His night would have been a whole lot better if the game ended there.

Houston started on the right foot with sophomore forward Breaon Brady scoring a pair of layups to take the lead.

After the Wolverines won in a wild finish, Twitter erupted.
