Officer Shot to Death in Clinton is Identified

A Clinton, Missouri, police officer was fatally shot and two others were injured Tuesday night while responding to an incident.

Morton worked as a full-time Clinton police officer from February 12, 2015, to January 10, 2017. Clinton is about 75-miles outside of Kansas City. Following the 911 call Tuesday, police responded to a home in Clinton, Mo., around 9:20pm local time.

We are blessed to live in a time and place with men and women of the character and quality of Officer Morton and Officer Michael.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Clinton police officer Christopher Ryan Morton was killed.

The report states members of the Troop A SWAT Team and the Bates County Tactical team entered the residence to apprehend the suspect at 12:10 a.m. Wednesday, March 7. The wounded officers were Nathan Bettencourt, who was in stable condition Thursday, and Nicholas Kasper, who was treated for gunshot wounds and released.

The two women heard arguing in the 911 call were not in any way connected to the Clinton home, Lowe said.

Lowe said, the injured officers were immediately rushed to a hospital for treatments, and it was later learned that they had sustained non-life threatening injuries.

"Grieving for the families & the officers of the Clinton Police Dept who lost another one of their own last night in the line of duty". "We are still investigating on how it transpired as far as giving the residence that the officers were sent to, but that will be part of the continuing investigation". The dispatcher begs Morton to "stay with us". Two other officers were also injured. The 30-year-old had been with the department, then returned to the force after a shooting last year killed Clinton police officer Gary Michael.

In a probable cause statement, Patrol Sgt. Brian Hagerty wrote that Widger told a fellow investigator that she helped Waters deal meth in exchange for him paying her bills. "They're going to endure more", Sgt. Lowe said.

When the officers entered the home, Lowe said they were doing what they were supposed to and that Widger's comments could not be taken at "face value". In an attempt to retrieve the suspect, the officers went into the house but were shot, and Morton was killed.

Widger was charged Wednesday with possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver and maintaining a public nuisance. Ian McCarthy, 39, was arrested after a two-day manhunt and is charged with first-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty, and the case was pending when he died.

Prosecutors will seek the death penalty in Michael's shooting, the Associated Press reported.
