Mexico: Embattled Kushner to Meet With Pena Nieto

Accompanied on his visit by other USA diplomats and security officials, the foreign ministry statement said Kushner will also meet Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray.

The White House has either fired or reassigned multiple employees over problems with their security clearances, according to ABC News. Videgaray was scheduled to accompany the Mexican head of state on that trip.

A USA delegation, including senior adviser to the president Jared Kushner and staff from the State Department and the National Security Council, will visit Mexico City Wednesday, Mexican officials confirmed to CBS News.

They were due to address security, drugs, crime, corruption and trade, the USA official said.

Videgaray has faced criticism for the emphasis he puts in his relationship with Kushner, and for announcing a Trump-Pena Nieto meeting was in the works only for it to collapse.

"The president's view was that it makes sense that if we get a successful agreement, to have them be excluded", US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer told reporters in Mexico City following the seventh round of Nafta talks on Monday (March 5).

He and Videgaray have reportedly cultivated a close personal relationship that often circumvents official diplomatic channels.

Mexico's foreign policy relations with the United States have become "extremely illogical", said one senior diplomat on Wednesday.

ABC News also learned late last week, Kelly wanted a list of remaining White House staffers with security clearance issues presented to him. He has lost access to valuable intelligence, US officials said.

Trump has insisted that Mexico must pay for the border wall, a campaign promise that has been rejected repeatedly by Mexican officials.

The envoy's visit came after a testy telephone conversation between Peña Nieto and United States President Donald Trump and was widely seen as a move created to smooth over strained bilateral relations. "Dialogue, seeking understanding is much better than confrontation".

"(The visit) is recognition by Trump that he's made relations with Mexico too tense", said congressman Victor Manuel Giorgana.
