LAPD detectives recover what they believe are the remains of missing actress

LAPD detectives have responded to Northern California to investigate a suspected shallow grave as they continue their search for an actress who has been missing for more than a month, authorities said Tuesday.

She was last seen leaving her apartment in Hollywood with her boyfriend, 33-year-old Chris Spotz, on February 23. During a press conference, LAPD Capt. William P. Hayes said that police believe the remains belonged to Shabani, but could not be definitive.

Shabani was last seen the afternoon of February 23 leaving her home near the 1700 block of Wilcox Avenue, between Hollywood Boulevard and Franklin Avenue, Hayes said.

The search for Shabani intensified after Spotz, 33, led police on a chase east of Los Angeles after they attempted to pull him over and took his own life at some point during the stand-off.

The Los Angeles Police Department contacted the office Monday to notify sheriff's officials that they were working an active missing persons case in the area.

Despite what a friend told KTLA earlier, authorities have not positively identified the remains as Adea Shabani's; a cause of death was also under investigation, though police said they suspect she was the victim of a homicide.

The man, identified by the L.A. County Coroner as Christopher Spotz, attended the same acting school as the missing woman, friends said.

An acquaintance of Shabani's fatally shot himself in the head last week.

During the investigation into her disappearance, PC Hayes said Spotz and his fiancee drove from Los Angeles to her parents' home in Fort Morgan, Colorado, just outside of Denver.

A native of Macedonia, Shabani moved to the US less than two years ago to pursue an acting career.

Later that week, Spotz made a statement through an attorney saying he and Shabani were driving to Northern California together when they argued near Santa Clarita, Hayes said.

Spotz killed himself with a self-inflicted gunshot on March 22 during a police pursuit.

Adea was a student at Stella Adler Academy of Acting, located in the heart of Hollywood, across the street from where the Oscars are held. Though he had an intimate relationship with Shabani, he was engaged to another person. Her family has also hired a private investigator.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to call LAPD's Missing Persons Unit at 213-996-1800, or 877-527-3247 during non-business hours or on weekends.
