JR Smith Suspended Over Soup Attack

The Cleveland Cavaliers announced veteran JR Smith would be suspended for one game "for conduct detrimental to the team" before Thursday night's matchup with the Philadelphia 76ers.

JR Smith was suspended by the Cleveland Cavaliers for one game due to misconduct.

"He was great this morning", Cavs Coach Tyronn Lue said before the game, as reported by the Washington Post.

"Something happened after shootaround", he told reporters.

Rodney Hood started in place of Smith, who has struggled in his fourth season with the Cavs. In 59 games (56 starts), Smith is averaging 8.3 points - the second-lowest average of his career - and shooting 39 percent. Smith was at shootaround Thursday. It looks like Smith will be back at practice today according to Coach Lue, but the suspension will cost Smith $94,897. J.R. Smith didn't serve up any explanation.

J.R. Smith drives past Luc Mbah a Moute during the first half of a NBA basketball game in Cleveland on February 3. Smith has started 213 of 223 games played for the Cavs since he was acquired from the New York Knicks in a three-team trade on January 5, 2015. Some of the guys who have been here, they get bored with the process, but we have to do it.

If any player was ever going to be suspended for throwing soup at an assistant coach, it would be J.R. Smith on the 2017-18 Cavaliers.
