Harvey Weinstein statue makes pre-Oscar debut

Just when you thought it was safe to return to Hollywood, a giant golden Harvey Weinstein atop a "casting couch" has been erected (gross).

The "Casting Couch" statue followed the appearance in Los Angeles on Wednesday of billboards designed by street artist Sabo that accused the entertainment industry of staying silent about sexual misconduct.

The statue, which appears to invite onlookers onto the couch for a photo op, popped up on Hollywood and La Brea, near the Academy Awards venue, the Dolby Theatre.

"I think the whole character of Harvey and the abuse and sexual abuse that went around him, I think that needs to change".

The Oscars are held on Monday (NZ time). "There may be people there that are victims of Harvey that still haven't spoken out". The phrase "casting couch" generally refers to requests for sexual favors in return for roles and career advancement in Hollywood.

One thing's for sure: the Oscars are very much worth the watch this year.

Plastic Jesus and Monroe built the Weinstein statue over a two-month period, aided by donations from numerous individuals. Visitors to the sculpture were sitting next to the faux Weinstein and taking selfies, turning it into an interactive installment.

For his 2018 installment, the artist was inspired by the last year's torrent of sexual assault, harassment and rape allegations against dozens of powerful men in Hollywood, including Oscars mainstay Harvey Weinstein. Weinstein, who has sought treatment at an Arizona facility, has repeatedly denied any instance of nonconsensual sex, but the claims helped spark the #MeToo and Time's Up movements.

Plastic Jesus, meanwhile, is known for creating buzz worthy pieces that feature some of Hollywood's most talked about figures, like a statue depicting the crucifixion of Kanye West, and a larger-than-life installation that featured the Oscar statue snorting lines of cocaine.
