Denver Broncos: Free agent possibilities that make sense

Running back Devontae Booker caught the third-most passes for the Broncos last season with 30 receptions for 275 yards.

The Vikings reportedly are one of the finalists for Cousins, along with the Jets and Cardinals. While Minnesota remains the favorite to land Cousins, the Jets' chances just increased exponentially with Denver out of the picture.

Keenum would have veterans Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders as his targets in Denver after Elway chose not to release either of the expensive wide receivers. He went 11-3 with 3,547 yards passing, 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

According to 9News Denver, Keenum's deal is expected to be a short-term agreement, suggesting it won't preclude the Broncos from taking a quarterback with the fifth overall pick in next month's draft if they so choose. The seventh-rounder surprisingly won what was the unenviable job of succeeding Peyton Manning as the starting quarterback for the defending Super Bowl champions during 2016, which was basically his rookie year.

He says no decision has been made by his client about where to play, despite an ESPN report that Cousins will sign a three-year, fully guaranteed $84 million contract with the Vikings. Brock Osweiler is a free agent and isn't expected back with the Broncos.

This is part of the reason the Broncos believe Keenum is a better fit.

Broncos quarterback John Elway has talked repeatedly during the offseason about the need to get better at quarterback.

Growing up a Broncos fan, I have a personal connection to all this.

It wasn't much of a secret that the Broncos' defense was too often hung out to dry by the offense's poor play last season, and more than a few of Denver's defenders voiced that over the course of their disastrous, 5-11 campaign. That move was primarily aimed at giving Minnesota depth at the quarterback position behind anticipated starter Sam Bradford given the major knee injury to Teddy Bridgewater.

Siemian, Lynch and Chad Kelly, a seventh-rounder previous year who sat out his rookie season with injuries, remain on the roster.
