"It is possible that further packages were mailed to additional mail processing facilities in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area", the FBI said in a statement Tuesday, adding a joint investigation with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service is ongoing. This incident is now under investigation and we refer all queries to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, ' Defense Department spokeswoman Lt. Col. Michelle Baldanza said to CNN.

Investigators are still trying to determine if all of the packages are linked and if all of them were sent from a single location.

The latest incidents follow the sickening of 11 people in February at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Arlington, Virginia, after an envelope containing a suspicious substance was received.

Tests and an X-rays of one package sent to Fort Belvoir showed it contained black powder, residue, suspected Global Positioning System and a fuse.

Officials have not confirmed how many packages were discovered, but media reports indicate as many as six packages were intercepted and seized by law enforcement officials.
