In a seven-hour long surgery on February 14, doctors at Nair Hospital in Central Mumbai removed from Santlal Pal the tumor that has caused him his vision.

Pal had apparently complained of progressive swelling on his scalp, along with headaches and a loss of vision in both of his eyes - all of which are indicators of a brain tumour. At the moment, Mr. Pal is recuperating in the hospital's ICU.

The doctors said that the pressure on the brain led to the patient losing his eyesight. "After the investigation, we chose to perform the surgery [on February 14], which was extremely high-risk", said Dr Trimurti D Nadkarni, professor and head of neurosurgery, adding that such large tumours are rare and a surgical challenge.

By the time he was admitted to B.Y.L. Nair Charitable Hospital in Mumbai he was blind and his scalp has swelled to 12 x 12 x 8 inches and appeared as if he had two heads mounted on top of each other.

Surgeons in India claim they've removed the world's largest brain tumour in a gruelling procedure that lasted seven hours, according to local reports.

It may have been the largest tumour in the world.

The tumor had been growing on Pal's head for three years now, and suddenly became so massive over the past year.

"The patient underwent CT and MR scans of the brain. Before the surgery, he had minimal vision, which may improve now", Dr Nadkarni said. The tumor was totally excised along with involved skull bone and that which had invaded the brain.

Pal required transfusion of 11 units of blood and was on ventilatory support for three days.

Pal's wife, Manju, told the Hindu that the couple consulted several doctors in Uttar Pradesh but were told that the tumour was inoperable.

During the operation, the doctors "had to cut open the scalp and remove the tumor".

For now, the medical professionals are uncertain what kind of tumor it was; samples have been sent away for testing to determine if the growth was malignant (cancerous) or benign.
