Up to 10 inches of snow forecast for West Michigan, Lansing area

The storm is expected to dump between 6-10 inches of snow by the time the snow winds down late Friday night. "Snow accumulations for east central Iowa (Dubuque, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City areas) will be 4-8" while 3-6" of snow is forecast for the rest of eastern Iowa, including Waterloo, Decorah, Tama and Washington. A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect for most of the area from midnight to 1 pm tomorrow.

The snow that moves in Friday will be another long duration type snow event, lasting from early Friday morning through Friday evening. The amounts of snow are not expected to break any records, but ice raining from the sky is always unsafe all around, even if you're just trying to drive down the street. More than half of the cancelations were at O'Hare, where seven inches (18 cm) of snow had accumulated by noon.

Road conditions began deteriorating Thursday night as the system neared Chicago, the Illinois Department of Transportation tweeted.

"We will be doing everything we can to prepare for and combat this major winter storm", said Metra CEO/Executive Director Jim Derwinski in the statement.

By late Wednesday morning, as the storm moves further northeast, the snow and ice should change to all rain along the coast from Washington, D.C.to New York City and Boston.

A significant storm is expected to descend on Chicago, Detroit and Milwaukee Thursday evening and Friday, with heavy snow and freezing temperatures expected to slow travel for millions of commuters. More than 200 flights were canceled at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

National Weather Service meteorologist Lanny Fisher says conditions will worsen throughout the day on Friday.

Chicago Public Schools canceled Friday classes ahead of the storm.
