Trump aide quits amid spousal-abuse claims

A senior White House official said Wednesday that he would resign after his two ex-wives accused him of physical and emotional abuse, with one presenting pictures of her blackened eye.

Jennifer Willoughby, Porter's second wife, told the Daily Mail that Porter was abusive and that she was "walking on eggshells" during their marriage because of his anger.

Next is Anthony Scaramucci, the former White House communications director who lasted less than two weeks on the job and was sacked last July after he went off on fellow top White House staffers in a conversation with a New Yorker reporter he says he did not know was on the record.

"I've been transparent and truthful about these vile claims, but I will not further engage publicly with a coordinated smear campaign".

Mr Porter's first wife, Colbie Holderness, told the Daily Mail that he choked and punched her during the five years they were husband and wife.

The White House had backed Porter until a photo showing Holderness with a black eye was published.

Asked Wednesday whether Trump had any concerns about the allegations against Porter or with the photos of Holderness, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, "I don't know".

Porter, a graduate of Harvard Law School and a Rhodes scholar, previously worked for Republican Sens. In every interaction I've had with Rob, he has been courteous, professional and respectful.

"I encouraged him to keep a stiff upper lip and work out his problems", Hatch told reporters, according to CBS News.

Willoughby, 39, said Porter had a terrible temper, once dragging her out of the shower to yell at her. The staff secretary is responsible for paper flow to the president, a particularly crucial job for a commander in chief who likes to get his own information from other sources.

Porter added that he was grateful for the opportunity to serve in the Trump administration.

Porter was Hatch's chief of staff from March 2014 until he came to the White House on Inauguration Day.

The claims reportedly came up during interviews that Porter's ex-wives gave to the Federal Bureau of Investigation as part of Porter's background check, CNN said, adding that he was having trouble obtaining a security clearance because of them.

Nevertheless, Chief of staff John Kelly called Porter "a man of true integrity and honor and I can't say enough good things about him". Domestic violence in any form is abhorrent. "I am proud to serve alongside him", the statement from Kelly read.

Politico echoed the same, reporting that the White House knew of the claims against Porter "weeks and in some cases months" before they were made public. Kelly himself remained behind in Washington, as did the top policy adviser Stephen Miller.

A person familiar with West Wing dynamics said Porter has expressed interest in an elevated policy role over the past weeks, beyond the position he now holds. "(I found out years later he had kicked his first wife on theirs.) A month later he physically prevented me from leaving the house", she wrote. Under President Barack Obama, the role was downgraded to a "deputy assistant to the president" title.
