Syrian peace conference delegates announce progress in Sochi

"This is non-transparent activity that runs counter to the Geneva process, because the five randomly chosen countries got together while the key players who are engaged in Syrian peace settlement were not invited there".

"Syrians still have a long and hard way to go, because most complicated tasks are yet to be solved".

The participants in the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi adopted a 12-point statement, which outlined the Syrians' views on their country's future.

The dialogue congress, according to reports, witnessed heated debate and even heckling as various stakeholders in Syrian issue engaged with each other.

Assad has ruled Syria since 2000 when he took over the presidency from his father, Hafez, and has carried out a genocidal campaign of bombings and chemical weapons attacks against his own people since the war began in 2011.

"A Constitutional Committee is to be formed, comprising the government of the Syrian Arab Republic delegation along with a wide-represented opposition delegation for drafting a constitutional reform", United Nations special envoy to Syria Staffan De Mistura said.

De Mistura said the final agreement on the committee would be reached in the UN-led diplomatic process in Geneva based on UN Security Council Resolution 2254 - which serves as a framework for political transition in Syria. They included Syrian government representatives backed by Russian Federation and Iran, and groups opposed to President Bashar al-Assad backed by Turkey. "We informed them (the Russians) of our conditions that they should remove all the logos and flags representing the Syrian government".

The deployment in the northwestern region was launched last October under a deal reached with Russian Federation and Iran during the Syrian peace talks in the Kazakh capital, Astana.

Convinced that Kazakhstan was trying to prove its political independence from Moscow by organizing the series of Astana Syria peace talks, which were also boycotted by most of the Syrian opposition, Putin made a decision to move the negotiations to Sochi.
