Pilot flies under overpass to make emergency landing on California freeway

A small plane made an emergency landing on a freeway south of Los Angeles Sunday evening, authorities said.

The 25-year-old said he made a split decision to land on the freeway when strong winds prevented him from getting to the John Wayne Airport.

"You don't have a choice", he told KCBS.

The plane landed near the northbound exit of Del Mar Avenue near the Orange County Fairgrounds.

The pilot, identified as 24-yaer-old Izzy Slod by KNBC, has stated that he and a friend had taken off from San Diego in a Beechcraft Bonanza aircraft when the engine lost power mid-flight.

The plane landed safely without causing any collisions and no one was injured, the Costa Mesa Fire Department confirmed. "We tried to make it to the airport but we got pretty strong winds blowing us away".

The incident was reported about 7:50 p.m. according to the Costa Mesa Fire Department.

"I didn't know if I would make it, but it paid off this time".

"We always try to make great records. and I guess this is a testament to that", Stapleton said.

Despite his training, Slod said he believed sheer "luck" played a role in the smooth landing, adding that while he is "not a believer", he does feel the safe touchdown was nothing short of a "miracle". In June 2017, a Cessna crashed onto the I-405 freeway near John Wayne Airport, injuring the husband and wife aboard the plane but no one on the freeway.

Planes landing on Southern California freeways aren't unheard of.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident, Allen Kenitzer, a spokesman for the agency, told the Los Angeles Times.
