House Appropriations chairman Frelinghuysen says he will retire after this term

Frelinghuysen, 71, had urged the Trump administration to support the effort created to ease rail traffic connecting Northern New Jersey to Manhattan, describing it as "the most important infrastructure project in the country" in a letter to the Federal Transit Administration earlier this month.

"I feel a whole lot more independent as House Financial Services chairman that I ever felt as conference chair", Hensarling said. My years in public service have allowed me to represent my home county of Morris for over 40 years, and also Essex, Passaic, Sussex Counties, and earlier on, Somerset!

Frelinghuysen, 71, was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1994. "With veteran and former federal prosecutor Mikie Sherrill's strong candidacy, and the abysmal approval ratings of Speaker Ryan's Republican Congress, Democrats are confident that this seat will turn blue next November".

When he was one of 12 House Republicans to vote against the GOP's tax overhaul in December, citing the impact of new limits to the state and local tax deduction in his district, he received backlash from his own party. Frelinghuysen won his election in 2016 by more than 20 points, but people have viewed him as vulnerable going into the midterms.

"This district has been held by a Republican since the 1980s, and we plan to keep it that way in November", said Rep. Steve Stivers, R-Ohio, chairman of the House GOP's campaign arm.

Four other family relatives served as US senators, including his great-great-great-great-grandfather, Frederick Frelinghuysen, who was one of the framers of the first Constitution of New Jersey and a soldier in the American Revolutionary War.

"Congressman Frelinghuysen's record of service to New Jersey's 11th district will be remembered for decades to come", Stivers said in a statement.

Following Frelinghuysen's announcement, several of the candidates vying to replace him issued statements thanking the 23-year congressman for his service.

Frelinghuysen assumed the helm of the Appropriations Committee at the beginning of the 115th Congress.

Granger, first elected in 1996 to represent Parker and Tarrant Counties in Texas's 12th District, now serves as Chairwoman of the U.S. House Subcommittee on Defense Appropriations.

"The Democratic primary is far from over, and in fact it is just beginning". Welcome back, congressman - we hope.

Frelinghuysen has been facing pushback within the district since January 2017 when the grassroots movement turned-super PAC NJ 11th for Change began holding weekly gatherings outside his Morristown office seeking either a town hall meeting or face-to-face interaction with their representative.

Frelinghuysen's district had long leaned Republican but was carried only narrowly by Trump in 2016.

His father, Peter H.B. Frelinghuysen, served in Congress from 1953 to 1975.

Frelinghuysen is a member of what some have called on of the greatest political dynasties in USA history.

Republicans who could run for the 11th District include tax attorney Rosemary Becchi, a former Senate Finance Committee staffer who serves on the board of Running Start, which is dedicated to getting more women to run for public office.
